Kelly Rowland is “Jumpin’, Jumpin'” at the opportunity to defend Jay-Z after his contentious remarks about his wife Beyoncé’s Grammy rejection.
“Shawn Carter is one of the greatest men I know, and his words ring so loud to me,” the Destiny’s Child star, 42, told the media in an interview on Tuesday, January 6. “I couldn’t be more proud of him.”
Beyoncé’s former bandmate also said that she was “really happy for a lot of things he said.” “I think that he made a lot of artists feel very seen and very heard in those minutes that he took on stage,” she said.
“I feel like she is an icon… and that’s for a reason,” the “Dilemma” singer said. “It’s because she sets trends. She is creative, her ideas are large and brilliant, and she just goes in and accomplishes them.”
The former girl group member went on to say that Beyoncé’s work is a “reflection” of her brilliance and originality, and that “it should be really celebrated in that way.” “I’m not saying that because it’s my sister, I’m saying it because it’s the truth,” she said with a laugh.
Kelly’s statement came during the 66th annual Grammy Awards, during which Jay-Z, 54, spent part of his time on stage to collect the Dr. Dre Global Impact give to criticize the Recording Academy for failing to give his wife the coveted Album of the Year.
Beyoncé, 42, is the most decorated Grammy winner of all time, with 32 wins to her credit since 2001, yet she has never won the most coveted honour in her decades-long career.
“I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than anyone and has never won Album of the Year,” the rapper said on Sunday, February 4, alluding to Beyoncé. “So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work.”
While some fans hailed the “Empire State of Mind” singer for coming out in favour of his wife of almost 16 years, others argued that such statements were inappropriate for the occasion.
“Jay Z stood on business for Beyoncé, and dissed the #Grammys for never giving her Album of the Year, during his speech while receiving the Global Impact Grammy Award!” One viewer wrote using X. “This is my type of carrying on!”
“Jay Z went a little Kanye during his speech,” another person said. “How you gonna roast the Grammys sir on stage accepting a Dr Dre Achievement Award and embarrass you kid standing next to you.”
