A clip from the reboot of the Disney show “The Proud Family” has angered right-wing critics after it featured a rap segment which implied that America has still not “atoned” to Black Americans for its racism, White supremacy and systemic prejudices. The tune is sung by animated pre-teen characters all of whom are black.
The said clip has set social media abuzz. It features animated characters singing a tune that says, “slaves built this country and we the descendants of slaves in America have earned reparations for their suffering and continue to earn reparations every moment we spend submerged in a systemic prejudice, racism and white supremacy that America was founded with and still has not atoned for.”
The clip soon earned the ire of conservative social media critics who termed it “blatant anti-white propaganda,” and “pure critical race theory.”
The clip celebrates the accomplishments of abolitionists who fought to bring an end to slavery. “We had Tubman, Turner, Frederick D. Then they say Lincoln freed the slaves, but slaves were men and women and only we can free ourselves. Emancipation is not freedom. Jim Crow, segregation, redlining, public schools feeding private prisons where we become slaves again,” the song adds.
The song also takes up the much-debated issue of reparations to the descendants of Slaves. “We’ll take the 40 acres, keep the mule. We made your families rich — from the southern plantation heirs to the northern bankers to the New England ship owners, the founding fathers, former presidents, current senators…”
“Why are they showing this woke BLM propaganda to our kids?” the EndWokeness account said on twitter.
