Houston Texans wide receiver John Metchie III participated in the team’s voluntary offseason workouts on Tuesday. The 22-year-old missed the entirety of his rookie training camp, preseason and regular season while battling leukemia.
Metchie was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia last summer, though positive developments regarding his recovery have surfaced throughout 2023.
The latest of these came this week, with the Texans releasing photos of Metchie back at work on the practice field.
Metchie was a second-round pick for the Texans in 2022 (No. 44 overall), but he missed his entire rookie season due to a battle with leukemia. Fortunately, Metchie prevailed and is now preparing for his first NFL season.
New Texans head coach DeMecoRyans is excited about the return of Metchie. However, Ryans doesn’t want to rush Metchie out on the field too soon. Unfortunately, missing an entire year of action in the NFL can slow down anyone.
“we’ll see John get involved with our offseason program and while Caserio didn’t confirm if Metchie was “a full go”
Ryans noted earlier this month during a recent radio interview with SportsRadio 610’s Seth Payne and Sean Pendergast.
The GM did provide a promising update on Metchie’s recovery.
The Texans hold the No. 2 overall selection in the 2023 NFL draft and there is a chance that Metchie and Bryce Young may be reunited again.
Young likely goes No. 1 overall, but regardless, it’s almost certain there will be a new QB1 in Houston this year for Metchie to grow with.
From a football perspective, the Texans are in a good place heading into tomorrow’s draft.
The Texans were very excited about getting Metchie last draft, and that anticipation has only heightened over the past year.
Aside from Metchie’s return, the Texans hold 12 picks in the draft including No. 2 overall, No. 12 overall and No. 33 overall.
Let alone someone going through a battle like Metchie had to endure. However, just being a part of the day-to-day action has to have John Metchie smiling all day long.
A great moment for Metchie and all those who may be dealing with a tough battle.
