R&B singer-songwriter Muni Long has announced her separation from her husband of over nine years, Raysean Hairston, a record label executive. The revelation came during a candid interview on The Real, where Long spoke openly about the emotional journey that led to their breakup.
Reflecting on her recent album Revenge, Long discussed the deep personal connection to the song “Ruined Me.” This track, laden with heartache, details the pain of a breakup and the challenge of rediscovering self-worth. When asked on The Cruz Show about the inspiration behind the song, Long admitted that her split from Hairston was a significant influence. “I always pull from real experiences because I’m writing from my unique perspective,” she explained.
“But this is the first time I’m putting my real life in it. It’s no secret…I’ve been married for nine years…it just didn’t work out, you know?”
Long, known for her soulful lyrics and raw emotional honesty, refrained from divulging specific details of the separation. However, she did hint that her decision to end the marriage was primarily driven by her unwillingness to endure “drama.”
“I don’t have time for drama, I don’t have time for nonsense,” she stated firmly. “This is one of the most amazing times in my life, and if you can’t celebrate that with me, I’m so sorry, but I’m going to have to leave you behind. I cannot.”
She further elaborated on the strains that had developed in the marriage, saying, “You wake up every day mad, and there’s literally nothing to be upset about. We have a beautiful child, we’re good. We might owe some bills, but everybody has that.” Her words reflected a sense of frustration and a desire for peace during this pivotal phase of her career.
At 35, Long expressed a mature understanding of her own needs and boundaries. “It takes incredible strength to realize that this was the love of my life at one point — and he probably could be really good for me if he got it together,” she acknowledged. “But I’m not willing to put my life, my passion, and my happiness on hold for you to catch up. Unfortunately, you might get it in a year…but I’m sorry, I’m probably already over it.”
Muni Long and Raysean Hairston were married in 2014 after meeting in Los Angeles. The timeline of their dating remains unclear, but their professional and personal lives intertwined significantly. Hairston, a co-founder of Long’s label, Supergiant Records, played an integral role in her music career, co-writing and producing several of her hit songs. Their partnership extended to a 2022 collaboration with Def Jam Recordings, adding another layer of complexity to their relationship.
Despite the public nature of her career, Long has historically kept her private life away from the spotlight. Fans were surprised earlier this month when she introduced her young son on stage during a performance of her hit single “Made for Me” while opening for Chris Brown’s 11:11 tour. It marked a rare glimpse into her personal world, one that she usually guards closely.
When asked if she felt nervous about making her private life public, especially regarding her separation, Long was resolute. “Anything that I told you, I’m gon stand on it. I have no shame. And I feel like if there’s anything that you’re asking that’s out of pocket then I’m gonna be like ‘that’s not your business.’”
Her unapologetic stance has only garnered more respect from fans, who admire her courage in navigating such a personal topic in the public eye. As she moves forward in both her personal and professional life, Muni Long remains a figure of strength, resilience, and authenticity.
