Kourtney Kardashian Opens Up About Life-Saving Fetal Surgery: “A Super Rare and Traumatic Experience”,Kourtney Kardashian Barker, 45, recently shared a harrowing experience from her latest pregnancy, revealing details about a critical emergency fetal surgery she underwent last summer. The reality TV star and entrepreneur opened up about the ordeal during the season 5 premiere of “The Kardashians,” offering a rare glimpse into the personal challenges she faced while carrying her fourth child, Rocky Thirteen.
The ordeal began with a routine scan performed by a high-risk doctor, known for being thorough and detailed. This scan, conducted just before Kardashian Barker’s husband, Travis Barker, 48, was set to leave for his Blink-182 tour, revealed something concerning. The doctor noticed an anomaly that required immediate attention from specialists, ultimately leading to the decision for fetal surgery.
“The doctor who will come to the house to do the scan is a high-risk doctor, really detailed and thorough at looking for everything,” Kardashian Barker explained. “And something caught his eye where he wanted me to see a couple of specialists and I had to go in for fetal surgery where they do surgery on the baby, which was terrifying.”
Recalling the night before the surgery, Kardashian Barker described the immense stress and anxiety she felt, exacerbated by the fact that Travis was out of the country. He promptly flew back to be by her side for the surgery, which took place the following day. This timing, she noted, felt almost miraculous.
“The timing of it was miraculous. That like saved everything,” she said. “I just feel so grateful that, you know, how everything played out and for the doctors that really helped make the best decisions that really saved our baby.”
Post-surgery, Kardashian Barker faced a difficult recovery period. The procedure left a hole in the amniotic sac, necessitating strict bed rest to ensure the safety and health of both her and the baby. She was instructed not to drive, stand for more than 20 minutes, or leave the house.
“I feel good. But I also felt good. So I’m like, yeah, if I don’t feel movement for like, five minutes, I’m like shaking him up because of the emergency fetal surgery that I had to have,” she said.
“I’m now like mostly on bed rest because there’s a hole in the amniotic sac from where they had to go into the surgery. So I’m not allowed to drive, I’m not allowed to stand for more than 20 minutes. I’m really not leaving the house.”
Kardashian Barker’s decision to share her experience publicly was driven by a desire to help others who might be going through similar situations. By opening up about the surgery on social media, she hoped to provide comfort and support to others who might feel isolated or fearful.
“They were so grateful that I posted something about it because they said so many people don’t feel comfortable, even telling their friend or their family members because they’re like, ‘Did they do something wrong or different things?’ ” she explained. “But my doctor’s like, ‘There’s nothing that you did wrong, it’s not age-related. It’s like just a super rare thing that happened.’ But then I was like, after this happened, I was like God’s got this. We’re good. This is a miracle and I’m gonna be super positive.”
Throughout the crisis, Kardashian Barker found strength in what she described as her “superpower” – a remarkable ability to remain calm during emergencies. This inner calmness, she said, helped her manage the stress and anxiety until the surgery was successfully completed.
“There’s some superpower that I have that in emergency situations, I get really calm. And then right when we left I was like, ‘Okay, I could take a deep breath. I could cry. I could get it out,’ ” she shared.
Reflecting on the experience, Kardashian Barker expressed profound gratitude for the medical professionals who guided her through such a precarious situation and for the positive outcome that followed.
