Coco Gauff Dominates Ons Jabeur in Opening Match of the WTA Finals, showcasing her incredible skills on the tennis court. At the WTA Finals on Monday in Cancun, Mexico, Coco Gauff had a stunning start, defeating No. 6 seed Ons Jabeur 6-0, 6-1.
In only 57 minutes, 19-year-old Gauff defeated 29-year-old Tunisian Jabeur. Since Caroline Wozniacki accomplished it fourteen years ago, the third-seeded Floridian became the first teenager to win a singles match at the season-ending finals.
For both players in the Chetumal Group, the match was their first ever. Monday was the first-round match for the remaining two players in the group. Czech Marketa Vondrousova, ranked seventh, was defeated by second-seeded IgaSwiatek of Poland, 7-6 (3), 6-0.
The competition is underway with two groups of four players, each participating in separate round-robins. The top two players from each group go on to the semifinals on Saturday, while the winners from Saturday compete on Sunday for the title.
Gauff vs Swiatek on Wednesday will pit the co-leaders of the Chetumal Group against one other.
In the match’s last set, Gauff faced three break chances from Jabeur, all of which she saved. She also converted five of her eight break opportunities.
Earlier, Swiatek overcame Vondrousova by winning the opening set 5-2 after falling.
After winning four straight games to regain serve, Swiatek overcame a 3-3 deficit in the tiebreaker to win the last four points.
“Honestly, even in the first part of the match I wasn’t feeling like I was playing bad,” Swiatek said. “I simply thought that during the rally’s last strokes, I was making blunders. I believed that although there was undoubtedly space for development, not much needed to be changed. I just wanted to play it safer and be more accurate and reliable.”
In the second set, Vondrousova gave up 13 unforced mistakes and produced only one winner.
Vondrousova said, “I was up 5-2 and she started to play better.” “After that, she didn’t really give me an opportunity. She was playing so well in the second set that there wasn’t much to do.”
On Tuesday, the Bacalar Group will resume operations. Fourth-seeded Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and eighth-seeded Maria Sakkari of Greece will face off in a matchup of players who lost their opening set. At the same time, top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus will take on fifth-seeded Jessica Pegula of the United States in a matchup of players who won their first set.
