Will Smith has finally addressed his 10-year ban from the Academy Awards, a penalty imposed following his shocking altercation with comedian Chris Rock during the 2022 Oscars. In a recent interview with the Associated Press on March 21, the acclaimed actor and musician shared his perspective on the ban and reflected on his personal growth since the incident.
When asked directly about how he plans to navigate his career under the Academy’s restriction, Smith gave a measured response.
“I am looking to be the best human I can possibly be, and I’m gonna take what I get with that,” he stated, remaining vague about any specific plans regarding his Hollywood future.
Expanding on his thoughts, the King Richard star revealed that he has spent the past two years engaging in deep self-reflection. “I’ve taken the last couple of years to really do a deep dive on the parts of me that may or may not have been in that level of certainty, and asking those deep, scary internal questions,” he said indicating a journey of personal and emotional growth. Addressing criticism from his industry peers such as Jim Carrey who suggested Smith had cracked under the pressure, the actor responded with a philosophical perspective. “There’s a small self the small concept of myself that can reach the end of his bandwidth.
He elaborated further, emphasizing a broader view of self-awareness. “It’s about not getting stuck in being just a narrow band of things, but giving myself permission to be wider in the truth of who and what I actually am.”
Following discussions about his remarks, Stephen took to X to double down on his opinion. “Yep. I said it,” he wrote, while also acknowledging the contributions Smith and his longtime collaborator Martin Lawrence have made to the industry.
As the conversation around the infamous slap continues, it remains to be seen how Will Smith’s reputation and career will evolve in the coming years.
