Will Smith is making waves with his latest album Based on a True Story addressing his infamous Oscars slap in bold lyrics. The album’s opening track Int. Barbershop Day released Friday, features DJ Jazzy Jeff and B. Simone. The song kicks off with voices discussing Smith’s cancellation with one questioning, “Who does Will Smith think he is?”

Will Smith doesn’t shy away from the 2022 incident when he slapped Chris Rock during the Academy Awards. On the first track, he raps,

“I heard he won the Oscar but had to give it back And you know they only made him do that ’cause he’s Black.” He also references the viral moment directly, warning, “You better keep his wife’s name out of your mouth.”

His second song, You Lookin’ for Me?, highlights his resilience: “Took a lot, I’m back on top / Y’all gon’ have to get acclimated.”

Despite his lyrics, Smith never lost his Best Actor Oscar for King Richard, though he was banned from Academy events for a decade. His shocking outburst followed Rock’s joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head a result of her alopecia.

Rock later turned the incident into comedy during his 2023 Netflix special, Selective Outrage, saying, “It still hurts. I got Summertime ringing in my ears.” He also compared himself to Manny Pacquiao, emphasizing he’s “not a victim.”

Meanwhile Jada revealed their marriage had been in turmoil admitting they had been separated for years before the slap. She later credited the incident for helping them reconnect.

Smith has been rebuilding his image, reuniting with Martin Lawrence for Bad Boys Ride or Die and returning to music after 20 years with his latest album.
