The NAACP has issued a formal travel advisory for Florida warning black Americans and people of color from traveling to Florida. The advisory states that actions taken by Governor Ros DeSantis have made the state unsafe. Florida is “openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color, and LGBTQ individuals,’ the Advisory notes.
The advisory has not gone down well with right-wing commentators and pundits who have slammed the iconic civil rights organization online. Supporters of Governor DeSantis have trolled the organization on social media.
“Before traveling to Florida, please understand that the state of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color,” the advisory says.
“Under the leadership of Governor DeSantis, the state of Florida has become hostile to Black Americans and in direct conflict with the democratic ideals that our union was founded upon,” NAACP President & CEO Derrick Johnson said. “He should know that democracy will prevail because its defenders are prepared to stand up and fight. We’re not backing down, and we encourage our allies to join us in the battle for the soul of our nation.”
Governor DeSantis is expected to launch his Presidential bid soon.
His press secretary rubbished the claims of the civil rights organizations calling its “nothing more than a stunt.” The secretary added, “As Governor DeSantis announced last week, Florida is seeing record-breaking tourism.”
