Donald Trump has shared his belief that Microsoft is actively negotiating to acquire TikTok from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance. Speaking aboard Air Force One, the 78-year-old former president confirmed discussions are underway and expressed his desire for a “bidding war” to ensure the best possible deal.
“I like bidding wars because you make your best deal,” Trump said, adding that competition would ultimately benefit all parties involved.
The former president has shown consistent interest in TikTok’s future, previously engaging with stakeholders to explore ways the app can continue operating in the United States. For more updates check our Youtube channel.
Trump recently postponed the implementation of a congressionally approved ban on TikTok for 75 days. This move allows more time for ByteDance to reach an agreement with an American partner. Trump has called for at least 50% ownership of TikTok to transfer to a U.S.-based company, citing national security concerns.
Despite these concerns, Trump has downplayed the idea that China is using TikTok to spy on Americans. “Is it that important for China to be spying on young people, on young kids watching crazy videos?” he asked during a recent interview with Fox News.
Reports from Reuters suggest that Microsoft is not the only interested party. Other contenders include Oracle and a group of outside investors, including billionaire Frank McCourt. YouTube streamer Jimmy Donaldson, also known as Mr. Beast, is reportedly part of another group exploring a potential deal.
The TikTok acquisition debate has highlighted the balance between national security, global business interests, and the growing influence of social media platforms. Trump’s advocacy for a competitive process could determine the app’s future in the United States.
