Donald Trump said he supports proxy voting for new moms in Congress. He made the statement Thursday while speaking to reporters on Air Force One.
“You’re having a baby I think you should be able to call in and vote” Trump said. “I don’t know why it’s controversial.”
The idea is part of a proposal led by Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna and Democratic Rep. Brittany Pettersen. It would allow new parents to vote remotely for 12 weeks. So far 218 lawmakers support the resolution. This is enough to force a vote on the House floor.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has long opposed proxy voting. He called it unconstitutional and said it was abused during COVID. Earlier this week he tried to shut down the proposal. But nine Republicans broke with leadership and joined Democrats to block Johnson’s move.
After Trump’s remarks Luna said Johnson contacted her. She said they discussed narrowing the plan to include only new mothers in emergencies. She tweeted that the plan is smart and noted only 13 women in history have given birth while serving in Congress.
Despite Johnson’s efforts to kill the resolution it remains alive. He canceled votes for the rest of the week after his defeat. It’s unclear if the issue will return before the House takes its April recess.
Supporters of the proposal say it’s about fairness and supporting women. Critics say it could lead to broader use of proxy votes. Trump’s support gives new life to the plan and adds pressure on GOP leaders to shift their stance.
