Donald Trump has introduced a bold new visa plan that gives wealthy foreigners a fast way to live in the U.S. The $5 million “gold card” comes with his face printed on it and includes symbols like the American bald eagle.
Trump showed off the card while speaking on Air Force One and said, “For $5m, this could be yours.”
The plan is designed to replace the EB-5 visa program. That system requires foreigners to invest in projects that create jobs in the U.S., but it has been criticized for being slow and full of fraud. Trump’s gold card skips that process. The only thing applicants need is money.
The card also may come with huge tax perks. Wealth experts say Trump’s team hinted that holders might only be taxed on income made in the U.S., not money made in other countries. That would be a major benefit compared to normal green card holders, who are taxed on worldwide earnings.
Despite Trump’s confidence, many experts are skeptical. They say most rich investors prefer cheaper visa programs in places like Malta, Portugal, or Greece. Those programs cost less than $1 million and are easier to qualify for. Still, Trump claims that 1,000 cards are already sold and that millions more could follow.
Critics also question whether this program can help reduce national debt. Some say the numbers don’t add up. But others believe the gold card could be popular among global elites looking for tax-friendly U.S. access. The final rules are still being worked out, but Trump insists this is a winning idea that could reshape immigration for the rich.
