President Trump has called on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to fire every military general involved in the botched U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. During a White House Cabinet meeting, a reporter asked about the employment status of those responsible for the August 2021 exit. Trump did not hesitate to express his opinion.
“I’m not going to tell this man what to do, but I will say that if I had his place, I’d fire every single one of them, Pete,” Trump said, sitting next to Hegseth.
The chaotic withdrawal left billions of dollars worth of military equipment in Taliban hands. It also resulted in the deaths of 13 U.S. service members and stranded many American citizens and allies. Trump has long criticized the operation, calling it one of the biggest failures in modern military history.
Hegseth responded by confirming that the Department of Defense is conducting a full review of the withdrawal. He stated that his leadership team is taking a different approach than the previous administration and is committed to holding officials accountable.
Trump suggested that most of the generals involved will likely be removed from their positions after Hegseth’s review. “I don’t see a big promotion in that group,” Trump added.
The former president also called on the Taliban to return American military equipment left behind, arguing that Afghanistan has now become one of the world’s biggest sellers of U.S. military gear. While the Pentagon review is ongoing, Trump’s statements have reignited discussions on military accountability and leadership failures.
