The Trump administration has unveiled plans for a nationwide crackdown on illegal immigration, beginning immediately on its first day in office. The operation will involve Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducting raids across the U.S., focusing on individuals with criminal backgrounds. However, officials warn that anyone in the country illegally could face arrest.
Incoming border czar Tom Homan confirmed the initiative during a Fox News interview, stating, “We’re going to take the handcuffs off ICE and let them enforce immigration laws without apology.” Homan added that ICE will prioritize individuals who pose public safety threats but stressed, “No one is off the table.”
The Wall Street Journal reported that Chicago is among the key cities targeted for these raids. A source revealed that 24 ICE field offices across the country will coordinate similar operations. This plan is part of the administration’s broader strategy to address illegal immigration, including mass deportations and enhanced border security measures. The move has already faced backlash from sanctuary cities like Chicago and others in Massachusetts and Arizona. These jurisdictions have policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities, such as declining to honor ICE detainers. Democratic officials in these areas have criticized the administration’s approach, citing concerns over community trust and resource allocation.
Despite the criticism, some officials are open to collaboration. New York City Mayor Eric Adams met with Homan to discuss removing individuals convicted of violent crimes. The administration’s DHS nominee Kristi Noem also expressed support for the plan during a recent congressional hearing, where she pledged to end the CBP One app. This app allows migrants to apply for parole into the U.S.
The upcoming raids highlight the administration’s commitment to fulfilling campaign promises on immigration reform. Supporters argue that the measures will improve public safety and enforce existing laws. Opponents, however, question the human and social costs of such aggressive tactics.
