Texas attorney Tony Buzbee, a longtime legal adversary of Sean “Diddy” Combs is withdrawing from over a dozen sex trafficking lawsuits filed against the hip-hop mogul in New York federal court.
According to newly obtained legal documents, Buzbee is formally stepping back from representing clients in 15 cases filed in the Southern District of New York. His withdrawal comes amid ongoing disputes regarding his eligibility to practice law in the district.
Buzbee cited his lack of admission to SDNY as the reason for his decision, stating he would be “backing out of the lawsuits until he is admitted to practice law in SDNY.” This development follows legal motions filed by Diddy’s attorneys last month arguing that Buzbee had “no business filing lawsuits against him in SDNY” due to his unauthorized status in the district. In a statement to U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams Buzbee acknowledged his oversight admitting,
“I made an error in judgment by failing to inform you that I was not admitted to the Southern District.” He further explained that his “admission status has become a distraction” from the central issue Diddy’s alleged victims and therefore, he has chosen to remove himself from these cases.
Despite his withdrawal, the lawsuits against Diddy will proceed as planned. Buzbee reassured that the alleged victims would continue to receive legal representation from established New York law firms.
Clarifying his position Buzbee told “I personally withdrew not my firm, from the few federal court cases we have on file until such time as my admission is cleared up. I’m still attorney in charge in all the New York state cases and intend to file cases very soon in Nevada and California.”
While Buzbee’s withdrawal may seem like a temporary setback, the legal battle surrounding Diddy is far from over. With new lawsuits expected in other states the controversy surrounding the hip-hop mogul continues to unfold.
