TikTok has returned to Apple and Google app stores after former President Donald Trump paused a planned ban. The popular social media app was at risk of being removed due to national security concerns. US officials feared that the Chinese government could exploit TikTok to spy on American users or influence public opinion.
The ban proposal was introduced because of concerns over data privacy. Lawmakers worried that TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, could share user data with the Chinese government. However, ByteDance denied these allegations and claimed that banning the app would violate users’ First Amendment rights.
Trump, who has been vocal about the issue, now suggests a possible deal. He proposed that TikTok could be jointly owned, with half of its ownership belonging to an American company. In a statement from the Oval Office, he expressed hope for a deal that would keep TikTok in the US.
“I’m going to make it worthwhile for China to do,” Trump said, suggesting that an agreement with China would benefit both countries.
He added that he believes Chinese President Xi Jinping would support the sale to a US buyer.
TikTok’s return to app stores allows millions of users to continue enjoying the platform. The app, known for its short videos and viral trends, has a large user base in the US. Many content creators rely on it for their livelihood.
