Big Pokey, along with Z-Ro, DJ Screw, Fat Pat, Lil’ Flip, and Lil’ Keke, was a founding member of the Houston hip-hop collective Screwed Up Click.
In a memorial statement uploaded on Instagram, fellow rapper Bun B dubbed Pokey one of the city’s most naturally brilliant artists. He was regarded as a modest, low-key mountain of a guy who moved with honor and respect.
“He was easy to love and difficult to hate.” He’d pull over, do what needed to be done, and drive home.
“One of our city’s pillars,”
Bun B remarked, according to 12 News.
Big Pokey may be seen on social media talking to a DJ on the bar’s second floor before passing out. In the video, a lady pushes her way through, announcing herself as a nurse and offering aid.
Pokey, 48, attended a Juneteenth party at Pour09 on Sunday. From 12:03 a.m. until 12:43 a.m., Beaumont police were summoned to assist the fire department and EMS.
Min Dai, the proprietor of Pour09, stated that there were Beaumont police officers present for the event. Pokey was able to obtain medical assistance and was immediately transferred to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont, where he was pronounced dead, according to him.
From 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, June 24, the bar will mark its second anniversary and pay tribute to Pokey. The rapper’s family will get half of the revenues from the event, which will be hosted by DJ Mr. Rogers of Houston and comedian Bubba Dub.
Dai described the occurrence as a “very sad incident,” according to 12 News.
