The Women in Music Awards is a special category introduced to honor contributions of female artists in the music industry. The award has previously been won by Olivia Rodrigo (2022), Cardi B (2020), Billie Eilish (2019), Ariana Grande (2018), Selena Gomez (2017), Madonna (2016), Lady Gaga (2015), and Taylor Swift (2014).
SZA first burst on the scene in 2011 with a string of R&B hits which soon culminated into acollaboration in 2014 with Beyonce and Nicki Minaj and a feature in Rihanna’s “Consideration” in 2016.
In December 2023, SZA announced her second album “SOS” which seems to have played a major role in her selection for the afore-mentioned award. SOS climbed up to the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200. The album collected 400 million streams in the US in only the first week of its release.
SZA’s announcement as the Woman of the Year was made by Billboard’s editorial director Hannah Karp in a press release saying,”Since she burst onto the scene in 2017, SZA has defied genres and continually released raw, powerful songs which have landed her music on the Billboard charts.”
“The release of her latest album, SOS has solidified her as a distinct force in contemporary R&B, and catapulted her into superstardom. We can’t wait to honor her as Woman of the Year,” the Executive Director adds.
SZA is a well-decorated singer and song-writer. She has previously won a Grammy, a Billboard Music Award, two MTV Video Music Awards, two BET Awards, and an American Music Award.
