Steven Horsford claims questioning Biden’s mental fitness is “ageism” and “ableism”. Rep. Steven Horsford, D-Nev., has come out in strong support of President Biden, dismissing criticism of the president’s ability to serve as rooted in “ageism” and “ableism”. Horsford, the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), made his comments on “CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip” on Monday night, as some of his fellow Democratic colleagues have called for Biden to step aside following his disastrous debate performance.
Phillip reported that a majority of voters, including Democrats, are having doubts about Biden’s ability to serve, to which Horsford responded that the conversation had been bogged down by “ageism”, which he found “interesting”. “What I find interesting is the issue is more around ageism, ableism, and not what this president, President Biden, has done,” Horsford said.
Horsford highlighted Biden’s achievements, including lifting 50% of children out of poverty, passing a bipartisan infrastructure law, and passing the bipartisan Safer Communities Act to keep communities safe from gun violence. “It is his experience and his civility, because he actually cares about the American people,” Horsford added.
Horsford’s endorsement of Biden comes as the president faces growing calls to drop out of the presidential race. Nine representatives and one senator have publicly urged Biden to step aside, citing concerns about his age and ability to serve. However, Horsford’s support is significant, as he is a key figure in the Congressional Black Caucus, which has traditionally been a strong supporter of Biden.
“Clearly, this president is fit to serve. He has been fighting for the American people. I know more than 14 million Americans have already voted for him, including those in my state of Nevada. We need to honor and respect the will of the voters who have selected him as our Democratic nominee,” Horsford said.
Biden has also received support from other members of the CBC, who met with him on a virtual call on Monday. During the call, Biden thanked the members for their support and promised to continue to have their backs. “You’ve had my back, and I’ll continue to have yours,” Biden said.
Despite the support from the CBC, Biden faces an uphill battle in his bid to stay in the presidential race. His debate performance was widely panned, and many Democrats are worried that he will not be able to defeat Republican candidate Donald Trump in the general election.
In addition to Horsford, other Democratic lawmakers have come out in support of Biden, including Reps. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) and Barbara Lee (D-Calif.). However, the calls for Biden to step aside are growing louder, with some Democrats worried that his continued candidacy will harm the party’s chances in the general election.
As the debate over Biden’s candidacy continues, one thing is clear: the president faces a tough road ahead. With growing calls for him to step aside and concerns about his ability to serve, Biden will need to convince Democrats that he is still the best candidate for the job. Despite the odds, Horsford remains confident in Biden’s ability to serve, and his endorsement is a significant boost to the president’s campaign.
