Six House Democrats join GOP voting against Kamala Harris for her ‘border czar’ role. The House of Representatives voted to condemn Vice President Kamala Harris’ handling of the US southern border, with six Democrats joining all Republicans in supporting the measure.
The resolution, which passed 220-196, marks the first piece of legislation targeting Harris since she became the Democrats’ presumptive 2024 nominee.

During debate on the bill, House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik accused Harris of overseeing “failed and dangerous policies” that caused the “most catastrophic border crisis in this nation’s history.” House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green similarly criticized Harris, saying she could have found the root causes of the crisis by “just looking in the mirror.”
“Testing new campaign messaging is not a good use of the House’s time,” said Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., the top Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee.
Democrats, however, accused Republicans of being openly political in their motivations. Rep. Bennie Thompson called the bill a “second-rate attempt at election interference” and said it was premised on falsehoods and cherry-picked statistics. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer countered that the American people know the truth and that Harris is responsible for the “unprecedented invasion at our borders.”
Left-wing lawmakers opposing the resolution argued that Harris’ mission to tackle the root causes of migration was not a directive to oversee border security and operations. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries accused Republicans of “making up” the border czar title.
The vote also highlights the growing divide within the Democratic Party over Harris’ candidacy. While many Democrats have rallied behind her, others have expressed concerns about her ability to win the presidency and her handling of key issues like the border crisis.
As the 2024 election approaches, the debate over Harris’ leadership and vision is likely to continue. Republicans will likely keep pushing for her to be held accountable for the border crisis, while Democrats will need to navigate their own internal divisions and present a united front behind their presumptive nominee.
In the meantime, the border crisis continues to pose a significant challenge for the Biden administration and Congress. With thousands of migrants arriving at the border every day, the need for a comprehensive solution has never been more urgent.
