A contentious exchange erupted during a House Oversight Committee meeting Tuesday, as Rep. Nancy Mace and Rep. Jasmine Crockett engaged in a heated verbal clash. The meeting, intended to approve committee rules and introduce new members, devolved into chaos over a debate surrounding Mace’s proposal to bar transgender women from using female facilities at the US Capitol.
Crockett, accused Mace of using the issue as a campaign fundraising ploy, saying,“I can see that somebody’s campaign coffers really are struggling right now. So, she’s gonna keep saying trans, trans, trans, so that people will feel threatened.” She further addressed Mace with the comment, “And child, listen,” which sparked immediate outrage.Visibly angered, Mace interrupted, declaring,
“You will not do that. I am not a child. If you want to take it outside, we can do that.” Her response came as House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer repeatedly banged his gavel, attempting to restore order.
Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost moved to strike Mace’s “take it outside” remark from the record, but Comer argued that the comment was non threatening, suggesting it could mean discussing the matter over coffee or beer.
After the meeting, Crockett expressed her concerns on social media, writing on X: “Today, I introduced an amendment to reinstate the Oversight Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. My Republican colleague threatened to physically fight me about it. Bless her heart.”
Mace countered with a defiant tweet, stating, “I will not be belittled. I will not back down. And I will hold the line. I don’t care how offended Jasmine Crockett is by my words.”
This is not Crockett’s first fiery exchange during a committee hearing. She previously clashed with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) in May 2024 over a contempt resolution against Attorney General Merrick Garland. That confrontation saw Greene accuse Crockett of wearing “fake eyelashes,” prompting Crockett to retort with a jab at Greene’s appearance.
