Republican Rep. Andrew Clyde has formally introduced articles of impeachment against Chief U.S. District Judge John James McConnell Jr., accusing him of abusing his judicial power. The move comes after McConnell ruled against the Trump administration’s decision to freeze federal funds.
Clyde alleges that McConnell “knowingly politicized and weaponized his judicial position to advance his own political views and beliefs.” The impeachment articles claim that McConnell’s rulings have obstructed Trump’s agenda and defied the will of voters.
“The American people overwhelmingly voted for President Trump in November, providing a clear mandate to make our federal government more efficient,” Clyde told Fox News Digital. “Yet Judge McConnell, who stands to benefit from his own injunction, is attempting to unilaterally obstruct the president’s agenda and defy the will of the American people. Judge McConnell’s actions are corrupt, dangerous, and worthy of impeachment.”
McConnell is currently presiding over a lawsuit brought by 22 states and the District of Columbia challenging Trump’s attempt to withhold federal grants. After McConnell ruled against the administration, the First Circuit Court of Appeals upheld his decision.
This impeachment effort follows a similar move by Rep. Brandon Gill, who introduced articles against another judge for pausing Trump’s deportation order under an 18th-century law. The push to remove judges ruling against Trump has sparked debate over judicial independence.
Chief Justice John Roberts recently issued a rare public statement condemning the impeachment efforts, stating, “For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision.”
Despite Roberts’ warning, Republicans remain determined to challenge what they see as judicial overreach. The impeachment resolution is expected to ignite further partisan battles over the judiciary’s role in shaping policy.
