NY AG Letitia James Sued Over Her ‘Political Witch-Hunt’ Against Pro-Life Groups. Represented by the Thomas More Society, the coalition asserts that James’ actions infringe upon their First and Fourteenth Amendment rights, as well as the New York state constitution. This lawsuit comes in response to James’ communication on April 22, wherein she accused several pro-life ministries of engaging in repeated and persistent misleading statements regarding their support of the Abortion Pill Reversal protocol.
In the lawsuit filed against James, the pregnancy organizations argue that her actions represent a politically motivated campaign targeting pregnancy organizations.
“James’ salvos against Plaintiff’s are the latest development in her politically motivated campaign against pregnancy organizations in general,” the lawsuit from the pregnancy organization says.
They contend that James is unlawfully encroaching upon protected speech and activities aimed at assisting pregnant women who express a desire to continue their pregnancies after ingesting mifepristone, the initial pill in the two-pill chemical abortion regimen.
At the heart of the matter lies the Abortion Pill Reversal protocol, a method endorsed by pro-life organizations. This protocol allows women who have second thoughts about their abortion decision to potentially reverse the effects of mifepristone by promptly taking a prescribed dose of bioidentical progesterone.
The coalition asserts that James’ intervention in this matter exceeds her authority and undermines the intimate medical decisions made by expectant mothers in consultation with their chosen medical professionals.
Heartbeat International, one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, plays a pivotal role in facilitating access to the Abortion Pill Reversal protocol. Its president, Jor-El Godsey, has voiced strong opposition to New York State laws that afford protection to abortionists and permit abortion on demand up until birth.
Godsey decries the targeting of organizations that support women in exercising their right to continue their pregnancies, describing it as unconscionable and an affront to women’s autonomy and dignity.
The coalition seeks redress from the court, requesting an injunction to prevent James from pursuing legal action against them. Additionally, they seek a declaration affirming that James’ notice to the pro-life group constituted a violation of their rights. The case was filed in the Supreme Court of New York in Monroe County.
Thomas More Society Executive Vice President Peter Breen has condemned James’ actions as a politically motivated attack on small nonprofits dedicated to serving pregnant women and their children for over five decades.
Breen argues that instead of targeting these charitable organizations with baseless claims under inappropriate legal statutes, James should commend their selfless efforts and contributions to society.
This legal battle takes place against the backdrop of heightened scrutiny faced by pregnancy centers across the country in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. With reproductive rights remaining a contentious issue, pro-life organizations continue to face challenges in advocating for their cause and providing support to pregnant women considering alternatives to abortion.
