The House of Representatives made history on Wednesday by unanimously passing a bill that would quadruple the pensions of Medal of Honor recipients. The legislation, which received an overwhelming 424-0 vote, proposes increasing the annual pension from $16,880 to $67,500, ensuring that the nation’s most decorated war heroes receive the financial recognition they deserve.

The bill, sponsored by Reps. Troy Nehls (R-TX) and Chris Pappas (D-NH), was introduced to provide greater financial stability to recipients, many of whom travel frequently for public events, military ceremonies, and educational programs. These trips, often paid for out of pocket, have placed significant financial strain on many honorees. Lawmakers argue that the increase is long overdue, considering the sacrifices these individuals have made for the country.

The funding for the pension boost will come from the Veterans Affairs (VA) disability compensation budget, with costs offset by extending a pension limitation for veterans without dependents from 2031 to 2033. The legislation would impact the 60 living Medal of Honor recipients.

The proposal received bipartisan praise, with lawmakers emphasizing the importance of honoring military heroes.

“These men have gone above and beyond the call of duty. It’s only right that we take care of them,” said one lawmaker.

The bill now moves to the Senate, where it is expected to pass without major opposition. If President Trump signs it into law, the new pension rates will take effect immediately. The bill’s passage also comes as the National Medal of Honor Museum prepares to open in Arlington, Texas, further highlighting the bravery and sacrifice of America’s war heroes.
