Comics Michael Che and Colin Jost tripped over one other with provocative jokes on “Saturday Night Live”‘s Christmas broadcast on December 16, sparking both indignation and hearty laughter.
Though some viewers felt that this year’s joke swapping was a touch too extreme, the most recent “SNL” Weekend Update segment executed the tradition well.
Consequently, Che has come under fire from critics for laughing so hard at the one-liners Jost scripted for him. Numerous people on social media have branded the jokes as “racist.”
The first transgression occurred when Che addressed the recent negative feedback Beyoncé got from fans who took issue with her paler skin tone and platinum blonde hair. As laughter started to build up, Che said, “In fact, Beyoncé looked so white, that I was finally attracted to her.”
At the Los Angeles premiere of the “Renaissance” film earlier this month, Beyoncé’s mother Tina Knowles, and her fans defended her, responding to the accusations that she deliberately tried to seem more Caucasian or like the Kardashian family.
The singer of “Black is King” even seemed to respond subtly to the commotion by sharing a picture of herself wearing pure white, highlighting her unmistakably melanated complexion.
Aside from that, the guys joked about how former President Barack Obama was like an African “dodo” bird, how Muslims and Jews “need Jesus” in light of the Israel-Hamas conflict, and how they laughed off a clever joke about Scarlett Johansson being a better black widow than Coretta Scott King.
Michael Che is the same individual who was called out for making offensive remarks about Simone Biles on Instagram, according to a critic of the sketch. He lied and said he had erased his Instagram account after being called out for doing so. This “joke” on Beyoncé is not unexpected. He is a rude guy who enjoys making fun of Black ladies.
“It’s even more ridiculous because a black man made the joke,” said someone else.
The “Top Five” actor jokingly claimed in 2021 that jokes regarding Simone Biles’s alleged sexual assault had been published on his Instagram account, leading him to believe that the account had been compromised.
That was blatantly racist, according to a different reviewer of the “SNL” season 49 finale. As in, “I was finally drawn to her because she looked so white!” How could it have been approved at all? It’s nasty, @nbcsnl!
Che shared a screenshot of Jost trying to dab “activist” Hattie Daniels during the episode, even though he hasn’t specifically addressed the backlash to the joke switch. Screen Rant verified that Che used Daniels, an aging actress, as a ploy to make fun of his co-star as he made divisive remarks against Obama and the widow of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
