In her newly released documentary on Amazon Prime titled In Her Words, Megan Thee Stallion has made a surprising admission, she lied to journalist Gayle King about her relationship with Tory Lanez. The Grammy-winning rapper, known for her hits like “Savage” and “Hot Girl Summer,” revealed that she initially withheld the truth about her intimate history with Lanez during a widely publicized interview, saying that she felt blindsided by King’s question on the topic. In the documentary, Megan candidly addressed the moment, saying,”Yes, I lied to Gayle King. I had no idea she was even going to ask me about that. I thought we were there to talk about the shooting, not my personal relationships.”
She elaborated on her mindset at the time, noting that any intimate moments with Lanez were brief and unplanned, fueled by “a drunk night or two.”
This shocking revelation has added another layer of complexity to the highly publicized saga between Megan, whose real name is Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, and Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson. The saga stems from a violent altercation in July 2020 in which Megan was shot in the foot, leading to significant legal battles and public controversy. Lanez, a Canadian rapper and singer, was later found guilty of the shooting and, in August 2023, sentenced to 10 years in prison. Throughout the case, Megan has been vocal about her experience, though her recent admission about their past relationship has stirred fresh debate. In April 2022, during her sit-down interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings, the then-29-year-old artist was questioned about her connection to Lanez. King inquired directly,
“What was the nature of your relationship with Tory Lanez? People believe it was more than just friendship.” Megan responded emotionally, “We weren’t dating. We were just really close; we hung out a lot.”
The Houston-born rapper explained that their bond grew out of shared hardships, particularly their mutual experiences with losing their mothers, which created a close friendship but, at the time, nothing more in her portrayal. When King probed further, asking if they had an intimate or sexual relationship, Megan denied it, saying, “Umm, I didn’t have a sexual relationship with Tory.” But now, in In Her Words, she acknowledges that her statement wasn’t entirely truthful. Megan explains that she felt deeply uncomfortable sharing the details of her relationship with Lanez publicly and feared judgment, especially given that someone she had trusted could harm her in such a traumatic way.
Lanez’s legal team has since responded to Megan’s admission. Ceasar McDowell, CEO of Unite the Peoplea nonprofit law firm representing Lanez commented on her confession, asserting that Megan’s dishonesty about her relationship with Lanez could undermine her credibility as a witness. “The fact that Megan lied about her sexual relationship with Tory raises questions about her reliability,If someone lies in front of millions, how can you trust what they say at other times?” McDowell’s statements reflect the broader concerns that this admission could have implications for the public’s perception of Megan’s statements, even though Lanez’s conviction remains unaffected by this revelation.
During Lanez’s December 2022 trial, Megan had already opened up about their intimate history, explaining that she initially chose not to reveal it because she was ashamed and hurt. Megan described feeling a sense of betrayal from someone with whom she had shared such personal experiences. Her reluctance, she explained, stemmed from embarrassment over being vulnerable with someone who could turn against her in such a violent way.
For Lanez, however, this confession by Megan does little to sway his stance. Following his sentencing, Lanez has continued to proclaim his innocence publicly. In a statement on Instagram after his sentencing, Lanez wrote, “I have never let hard times intimidate me, and I won’t let jail time define me. I have always maintained my innocence, and I always will.” He went on to clarify that although he took “responsibility for all verbal and intimate moments” shared, he in no way accepted responsibility for the “charges I’m being wrongfully convicted of.”
Despite Lanez’s denial of the charges, the jury found him guilty of the shooting, which has had profound consequences on both their lives. Megan’s decision to openly address her earlier lie may reflect her attempt to take control of her narrative and clarify any ambiguities that might persist in the public’s mind. The release of In Her Words has sparked fresh discussions about the complexities of truth, vulnerability, and public scrutiny faced by women in the entertainment industry, especially those who endure trauma while under the microscope of fame.
