Mayor Eric Adams has the lowest approval rating for a New York City mayor
As New York City Mayor Eric Adams faces a federal investigation and concludes his second year in office, voters are expressing their opinions on his job performance.
According to a Quinnipiac poll released on Wednesday, he received a “historical approval rating of 28%.”
This is the lowest approval rating ever recorded for a New York City mayor since Quinnipiac polling began in 1996.
Local residents were surveyed about various aspects of the mayor’s performance, including his handling of crime, public schools, the migrant crisis, the city budget, and homelessness.
Mayor Adams receives no positive news from the poll, as voters not only rate him poorly for his performance at City Hall but also have a less favorable opinion of his character.
According to Mary Snow, the Assistant Director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, the city’s struggles with budget cuts, a migrant crisis, and the federal investigation into the mayor’s 2021 campaign, along with a recent accusation of sexual assault from 30 years ago, have all had a negative impact.
More than 80% of voters express worry about the potential effects of the citywide budget cuts on their daily routines, while almost two-thirds of the individuals surveyed show support for increasing taxes on the wealthy.
When it comes to the ongoing migrant crisis, his figures are not much more positive. More than 80% of voters are concerned about the increasing number of migrants and the city’s ability to handle this situation.
Additionally, voters overwhelmingly believe that the federal government is not providing sufficient support to the city.
Affordable housing and crime are considered equally pressing issues by New Yorkers, followed by concerns about immigration, homelessness, and inflation.
In comparison to February of last year, the percentage of participants who consider crime as a highly significant issue has decreased from almost 75% to nearly 60%.
When examining personal characteristics, more than 50% of voters express doubts about Adams’ ability to provide effective leadership, comprehend the concerns of the populace, and maintain honesty.
Regarding the public officials under review, New York Governor Kathy Hochul received an approval rating of 45%.
Fabien Levy, Deputy Mayor for Communications at City Hall, responded to the findings by saying, “While incorrect polls are released regularly, the genuine numbers cannot be questioned: crime rates have decreased, job opportunities have increased, and we have been consistently contributing billions of dollars to support the working class.
There is always more work to be done, but there is no doubt that this city has improved under Mayor Adams’ leadership.”
According to the survey, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, City Comptroller Brad Lander, City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, NYC Schools Chancellor David Banks, and NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban all received an approval rate of 45%.
According to a recent survey conducted by American Pulse & Research Polling, Andrew Cuomo, the former Governor, is gaining popularity in a potential Democratic primary race for City Hall in 2025.
In this poll, which was released on Tuesday, over 40% of Democrats expressed their preference for Cuomo, while slightly over 20% showed support for Adams, leaving approximately 30% undecided.
The American Pulse & Research Polling was funded by Curtis Sliwa, the GOP candidate who ran for NYC mayor in 2021. The survey results were subsequently shared through a press release issued by Maria Sliwa Public Relations on Thursday.
Snow said that in a city where the words “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” are part of its history, voters express that there is a limit.
