Tensions are rising in New Orleans as Super Bowl LIX approaches, with concerns being raised about the halftime show set to feature Kendrick Lamar. According to a report from Nola.com, a group of 17 Republican legislators from Louisiana has sent a letter to the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation and the Louisiana Stadium and Expo District. Their message taxpayers should have a greater say in what happens during the major sporting event, which will see the Kansas City Chiefs face off against the Philadelphia Eagles on February 9, 2024.
The letter highlights past Super Bowl Halftime Shows that lawmakers deem inappropriate, specifically calling out Rihanna’s 2023 performance and Jennifer Lopez’s 2020 show. The legislators claim that Lopez’s act involved “little clothing, sexually suggestive gestures, and the use of a stripper pole,” while also criticizing her interactions with dancers on stage. They further referenced Janet Jackson’s infamous 2004 “wardrobe malfunction” as another example of what they consider unsuitable content for a family-friendly broadcast.
One of the strongest criticisms was directed at Rihanna’s 2023 performance, accusing her of
“groping herself while singing lyrics so offensive that few Louisiana adults could recite them aloud without embarrassment.”
The lawmakers stated that they intentionally refrained from quoting the lyrics in their letter due to their explicit nature.“We acknowledge that past Super Bowls may have been held in states more accepting of these types of performances, but in Louisiana, such acts are considered inappropriate for children, disrespectful to women, and not in alignment with the values of most Louisiana families,” the letter asserted.
While acknowledging that contracts for this year’s Super Bowl have already been finalized, the lawmakers urged future agreements to include provisions ensuring that halftime performances remain appropriate for audiences of all ages. Their request reflects a broader push to maintain stricter oversight over high-profile entertainment events held in the state.
