According to court records acquired by The Blast, the imprisoned R&B singer rejects any blame in the million-dollar lawsuit filed against him, saying he was unaware of their problems with Donnell Russell and should not be held liable for their repercussions.
As previously reported, the drama started in August 2023, when the ladies received $10.5 million after claiming Russell and Kelly of trying to halt the 2018 New York City showing of the Lifetime docuseries “Surviving R. Kelly” with a mass shooting threat.
In the complaint, the musician claims that even if he received the legal papers in jail, he could not interpret them.
“I would not have been able to interpret or identify the lawsuit from the other legal materials I received. “Everything looks the same to me,” he adds.
“I rely on my lawyers to explain things because I cannot read or understand words beyond that of a grade-schooler.”
Kelly’s declaration included a lengthy defense of the claims brought against him by six women. Given his confinement at Butner FCI in North Carolina, he noticed that the case had slipped under his radar.
The “I Believe I Can Fly” singer said he found out about the $10.5 million verdict granted to these ladies via a friend. He has no recall of ever receiving the lawsuit despite obtaining several legal documents from his attorneys.
Playing the victim, the guilty musician attempted to elicit compassion by admitting to being “emotionally wrecked and placed on suicide watch” after his 2021 conviction. He had other outstanding criminal matters and was often sued, making it difficult to keep track of everything.
He could not remember getting the lawsuit in this instance during this tumultuous period. I did not intentionally neglect any litigation. Kelly was moved to MCC Chicago in early July 2022 for a trial in the Northern District of Illinois.
However, she received no papers relating to the Don Russell case in Chicago. I’m not sure whether someone attempted to send me letters about this litigation, but it was usual for my mail not to arrive. If I had been notified of this litigation, I would have fought it.”
In 2018, the media celebrity reiterated that he had nothing to do with Russell, stating that the latter ran his own business and did not work for him in any manner. Kelly denied involvement in the purported shooting threat, adding, “I had no knowledge that Don Russell was trying to stop the screening of the Lifetime show in New York.” I didn’t ask him to do this. I had no idea he was going to call in any form of threat. If he phoned in a threat to halt the screening in New York, he did it for personal reasons.”
Would putting his old boss under the bus help to resolve the case against him? Only time will tell.
Kelly sues prison officials for allegedly leaking his information.
Kelly’s newly revealed court records were dated November 2, 2023, the same month he sued jail authorities for allegedly disclosing his details to a blogger. The troubled artist claimed three unidentified authorities collaborated with Tasha K to expose his actions while in Chicago police custody.
In court filings, he alleged that the stolen material extended back to 2019 and contained his private calls, visitor records, email exchanges, and more. Kelly, seeking damages, felt that these authorities had sold his actions to the blogger for cash.
He said that the authorities handed Tasha K ammo to spread negative information about him online. According to his claim, the decision caused him severe mental anguish, injured his reputation, and violated his privacy.
The “I’m Your Angel” singer also chastised the United States government for incompetence, stating that jail workers had access to and shared his private information. Following the complaint, Tasha K denied any association with jail authorities.
According to the blogger, she was not engaged in any unlawful activities involving the artist and did not collaborate with anybody to get information on him. Kelly’s complaint came months after a Chicago judge sentenced him to an extra 20 years in jail.
He was convicted of sexually abusing youngsters and possessing child sexual abuse material. Kelly will serve 31 years in prison as a result of this judgment.
