Duane “Keefe D” Davis has spoken out for the first time since his arrest maintaining his innocence in connection to the 1996 murder of hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur. Speaking from the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas, where he has been held since September 2023, Davis insists he is wrongfully accused.
In an exclusive interview with ABC News’ Good Morning America, Davis expressed his frustration, declaring,
“I’m innocent. I did everything they asked me to do. I changed my lifestyle. I stopped selling drugs, got new friends. I should be enjoying my golden years with my grandkids, watching them play football and basketball not sitting in a cell.”
For nearly 27 years, the murder of Tupac Shakur remained one of hip-hop’s most infamous unsolved cases. Davis, a former member of the Southside Crips, was arrested decades later, with prosecutors alleging he was the mastermind behind the fatal shooting. However, Davis remains adamant that there is no real evidence linking him to the crime.
“I did not do it,” he stated emphatically. “They have nothing. No gun, no car, no Keefe D at the scene nothing. And they know it.”
Davis also claims that 20 to 30 witnesses will testify in court to support his alibi arguing that he was nowhere near the crime scene when Tupac was gunned down.
While Davis has previously detailed his knowledge of the murder in interviews and his 2019 memoir Compton Street Legend, his legal troubles escalated due to statements made to Las Vegas detectives. He had initially entered into a proffer agreement with law enforcement in 2008, allegedly offering information in exchange for immunity. However, a Clark County judge ruled in January 2024 that Davis failed to present any proof of such a deal.
Authorities believe the murder was orchestrated following a physical altercation at the MGM Grand, and Davis now faces first-degree murder charges, with his trial set for February 2026.
