Jeffries claims Republicans are fabricating Kamala Harris’s title as border czar. Jeffries accuses Republicans of ‘making up’ Kamala Harris’s role as border czar. He argues that the title is being used misleadingly for political attacks.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries accused Republicans of fabricating the title of “border czar” for Vice President Kamala Harris, as six House Democrats voted to criticize her handling of the migrant crisis.
Jeffries claimed the resolution, introduced by House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, was “fake and fraudulent” and that Harris was never assigned the position of border czar.
Despite Jeffries‘ claims, Harris was indeed tasked by President Biden in 2021 to lead the administration’s response to the border crisis, particularly addressing the root causes of mass migration from Central and South America. Republicans have long criticized Harris for not doing enough in this role, and their attacks have gained traction since she became the presumptive Democratic nominee.
The resolution passed the House with six Democrats joining all voting Republicans, despite Jeffries’ insistence that Republicans have no affirmative agenda or vision for the American people. The six Democrats who voted for the resolution are Reps. Jared Golden, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, Mary Peltola, Henry Cuellar, Don Davis, and Yadira Caraveo, who have not endorsed Harris for president.
Jeffries maintained that House Democrats are unified behind Harris, despite the dissenting votes. He stated that he had not heard from any House Democrats who were upset with the party’s handling of the recent political upheaval, and that President Biden’s decision to pass the torch to Harris was a selfless move that demonstrated the party’s unity.
“I haven’t had a single conversation with a member of the House Democratic Caucus who has expressed that they are upset with what has unfolded,” Jeffries said.
The vote comes as Harris faces increased scrutiny over her handling of the border crisis, with Republicans accusing her of being absent and ineffective in addressing the issue. Harris has pushed back against these claims, arguing that she has made significant progress in addressing the root causes of migration and improving conditions at the border.
The resolution also highlights the growing divide within the Democratic Party over Harris’ candidacy. While many Democrats have rallied behind her, others have expressed concerns about her ability to win the presidency and her handling of key issues like the border crisis.
As the 2024 election approaches, the debate over Harris’ leadership and vision is likely to continue. Republicans will likely keep pushing for her to be held accountable for the border crisis, while Democrats will need to navigate their own internal divisions and present a united front behind their presumptive nominee.
In the meantime, the border crisis continues to pose a significant challenge for the Biden administration and Congress. With thousands of migrants arriving at the border every day, the need for a comprehensive solution has never been more urgent.
Harris has proposed a number of measures to address the crisis, including increasing aid to Central and South American countries, improving conditions at border facilities, and providing a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. However, these proposals have been met with resistance from Republicans, who argue that they do not go far enough in securing the border.
