Fans link Jay-Z’s acceptance speech to the notorious 2009 MTV Video Music Awards scene when Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift.
Taylor Swift made history at the Grammys this year, winning Album of the Year for the fourth time. It seems that Swift’s success nearly always necessitates an interruption.
Kanye West interrupted Beyonce’s Video of the Year acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2009, insisting she earned the honor.
Although Swift was not attacked during her speech this time, Jay-Z expressed his dismay, stating that Beyonce “never won Album of the Year.”
During his acceptance speech for the Dr. Dre Global Impact Grammy accolade, Jay-Z, who appeared on stage with his daughter Blue Ivy, expressed his disappointment that his wife had never won the coveted award.
The Young Forever rapper said, “Obviously, it’s subjective because, you know, it’s music and opinion-based.”
Then he turned to Beyonce and added, “But you know, some things, you know, I don’t want to embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year.”
“So, even by your standards, it does not work. Think about it. The most Grammy Awards; never won Album of the Year. “It doesn’t work,” Jay-Z said.
“Some of you may leave tonight feeling cheated. Some of you may be robbed. Some of you do not belong in this category. All right. That’s all there was to it. “When I’m nervous, I tell the truth,” the Empire State of Mind rapper said.
In reaction to Jay-Z criticizing the Grammy Awards for denying Beyonce a significant honor, many people argued that Kanye was correct in 2009. However, the Flashing Lights rapper’s delivery was seen as inappropriate, eliciting strong criticism.
According to one X, a former Twitter user, “Feels like the Grammys still view hip-hop as a side dish, not the main course.”
The message is correct, but the show is incorrect. The VMAs had no trouble giving Black musicians Video of the Year. If I’m not mistaken, didn’t Beyoncé win the night’s biggest prize (and give her time to TSwift in a classic B move)? Dame AND YE never choose the RIGHT time.
Another admirer said, “Well, Jay-Z had more class.” One additional X user commented, “Right message, wrong show.” The VMAs had no trouble giving Black musicians Video of the Year. If I’m not incorrect, didn’t Beyoncé win the night’s biggest prize (and give her time to TSwift in a classic B move)? You and Dame never select the right time.”
