Jay-Z disclosed additional flaws in his marriage to Beyoncé on his new track with D’Angleo, “I Want You Forever.”
According to the media report, the moody tune appears on the soundtrack of the forthcoming dramedy The Book of Clarence. The music mogul also created and composed music for the new flick.
The iconic R&B artist bookends Jiggaman’s rather sensitive lyrics, which seem to refer to a split between him and his wife of 16 years, Beyoncé.
Jay-Z—born Sean Carter—delivers his rhymes more like a poet than a rapper as he opens his stanza, “Life don’t taste the same without you/Tears in my champagne about you. Quit playing, girl. You know I’m obsessed about you.”
Do not tell us you’re cheating again, Jay.
He continued his purposefully slow flow, “You know that week you ran back to your mama’s house, ask my friend, they can vouch/Slept on the couch ’cause the bed ain’t a bed without you.”
The excellent MC then focuses on his father, Andis Reeves, as a potential explanation for his irresponsible behavior.
“Love you for my life, and I put that on my dead/Put that on my daddy’s New Port, cigarettes/He blew cancer rings, I got toxic traits/Look who coaxed the ghost out my body, got me straight/I don’t want no smoke, baby girl you fire/Can’t end up like my folks, nah,” he raps before D’Angelo’s raspy vocals dance over the violin-led track.
The song has received mixed reviews, with one YouTube commentator claiming it didn’t require Jay’s verse.
“As a major Hov fan, I can only say this song works well without his input. “It’s done beautifully.”
Another said, “This is D’Angelo’s world that Jay visited!”
A further critic said the song “[Sounded] like Jay crashed D’Angelo’s session.”
Some fans didn’t like the single, with or without the “Song Cry” rapper’s involvement. One reader grumbled, “This could have gone into my ‘watch later’ playlist and stayed there.” Foreeevvvvaaa.”
Jay and Bey have been open about their marital troubles. Beyoncé put her soul into her award-winning album Lemonade in 2016, followed by Hov’s 4 44 the following year. On his highly lauded project, the Brooklyn millionaire admitted to philandering and passionately apologised for his actions.
The Queen’s 2022 album, Renaissance, is a homage to Black queerness. In “Plastic Off The Sofa,” she refers to their marriage and the public scrutiny it receives.
In the wonderfully written song, she croons, “I know nobody’s perfect, so I’ll let you be/It’s the way that you wear your emotions on both of your sleeves, ’til the face you make when I tell you that I had to leave…” We don’t need the world’s approval. They’re too harsh on both me and you, boy.”
Jay and D’Angelo’s song for The Book of Clarence, starring LaKeith Stanfield and Teyana Taylor, features music by Lil Wayne, Doja Cat, Kodak Black, Jorja Smith, Shabba Ranks, and Kid Cudi.
The film, partly produced by Hov, is presently playing in cinemas around the country but is also accessible on streaming services. The “Big Pimpin” rapper revived his Instagram account in August 2023 to post the film’s trailer.
We’re curious whether Bey would do a little promotion for her man’s movie, but in any case, her husband has to quit playing in our girl’s face. And if he doesn’t, Bey, get that lick back, lady.
