Jay-Z Seeks Sanctions Against Lawyer in Rape Case

On January 8, 2025, rap icon Jay-Z filed a motion in Manhattan federal court, requesting the dismissal of a lawsuit that accuses him and fellow artist Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl during a party in 2000. Jay-Z further sought sanctions against Tony Buzbee, the Houston-based attorney representing the plaintiff, citing inaccuracies in the allegations and insufficient investigation before filing the case.

The lawsuit, initially naming only Combs, was later amended to include Jay-Z. It claims that an unnamed girl, referred to as Jane Doe, was drugged and assaulted by both men at a party hosted by Combs after the 2000 MTV Music Awards. Both Jay-Z and Combs have strongly denied the allegations.

Jay-Z’s lawyer, Alex Spiro of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, argued that the claims lacked credibility. The filing referenced an NBC News report from December, which cast doubt on the allegations. According to Jay-Z’s legal team, Jane Doe’s claim that her father picked her up after the alleged incident was contradicted by her father, who reportedly had no recollection of such an event. These discrepancies, the filing argued, undermine the accusations and support Jay-Z’s assertion of innocence.

To seeking dismissal, Jay-Z’s filing requested that U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres impose financial penalties on Buzbee, such as requiring him to cover Jay-Z’s legal expenses. Spiro described the lawsuit as baseless and an abuse of the legal process.

Responding to the motion, Buzbee accused Jay-Z’s team of attempting to intimidate opposing counsel and described the filing as desperate and filled with “falsehoods and half-truths.” The legal battle between the two parties has been intensifying. In November 2024, Quinn Emanuel filed a lawsuit against Buzbee in Los Angeles, accusing him of attempting to extort money by threatening false allegations. Buzbee countered with lawsuits in Texas, alleging harassment by Quinn Emanuel’s team. For more check our YouTube channel.

Adding to the complexity, Buzbee’s firm has filed additional lawsuits against Quinn Emanuel and Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s entertainment company. These claims allege that they encouraged former clients of the Buzbee Law Firm to file frivolous cases.
