Reggie Wells, Oprah Winfrey’s Former Makeup Artist Died At The Age Of 76. Working with Black celebrities and models who had trouble finding cosmetics alternatives that matched their skin tones, Mr. Wells could carve out a place for himself during a period when cosmetic companies did not serve Black women.

Reggie Wells, who collaborated with Halle Berry and Beyoncé as well, passed away after a protracted illness.”

Reggie Wells, a makeup artist and innovator in the beauty profession, passed away. Wells spent thirty years working with Oprah Winfrey and other A-list celebrities, including Beyoncé, Aretha Franklin, Michelle Obama, Diahann Carroll, and Halle Berry.

He passed away in his birthplace of Baltimore on January 9th, according to the local newspaper. He died there “after [battling] a long illness.” He was 76.

According to Banner, Wells taught city art after earning degrees from Baltimore City College and Maryland Institute College of Art before becoming a well-known makeup artist.

He took a gamble and relocated to New York City in the middle of the 1970s. There, he worked at beauty counters and ultimately got jobs at magazines like Glamour, Harper’s Bazaar, and Essence, which comprised a significant portion of his portfolio and included Winfrey’s makeup on the cover.

From there, he advanced into the realm of celebrity arts. Before working with Derrick Rutledge, her current makeup artist, Winfrey recruited him as her full-time makeup artist in 1990. For his work on The Oprah Winfrey Show, he was nominated for five Daytime Emmy Awards, and in 1995, he won one.

Wells did more, however, than just put on lipstick. In his work with some of the greatest celebrities in Hollywood, particularly Black women, he often developed custom colors of powder and foundation to match the skin tones of his clients.

In addition, he showcased his skills to the Baltimore area by giving makeovers to elderly residents of retirement communities. His 2000 book, Face Painting: African American Beauty Techniques From an Emmy Award-Winning Makeup Artist, detailed his genius.

“What I learned from Oprah is why I am doing this today,” he stated in a 2017 interview with The Baltimore Sun. “I’m doing this for the forgotten people of families. I’m giving unknown moms and grandma makeovers comparable to those Oprah would provide.

Along with his niece Tasha Jackson, Wells is survived by his sisters Priscilla Tingle, Patricia Banks, and Orrie Wright.

“He was the party animal.” He left everyone in the room in disbelief the moment he entered. Jackson told the Banner, “He could command the room.”  “He told stories.” His words had such a captivating quality. It captivated me. It enabled you to pretend you were present at the tale. There was nobody who could match his gripping power over you.

“He made sure everyone felt good about their appearance daily and always gave back.”

Additionally, Wells’ Instagram account reported his death.

“In remembrance of Reggie Wells, who lived from 1947 until 2024 and was a great pioneer in makeup artistry. According to the article, legends like Oprah, Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Chaka Khan, and Aretha Franklin were all impacted by his extraordinary skill.

In addition to decorating faces, Reggie had a lasting impression on the beauty business as the author of “Face Painting: African American Beauty Techniques” and a two-time Emmy Award-winning artist. He was our friend, inspiration, and mentor; we shall miss him much. May the many memories he leaves behind help to perpetuate his legacy.”

In the comments, several of Wells’ well-known clientele recalled working with the makeup artist.

“Rest in Peace, Reggie!” Written by Kelly Rowland. “I appreciate your great tales, chuckles, and Cheshire Cat grin! Love Is Always♥️🙏🏾♥️

Michelle Williams, another member of Destiny’s Child, said, “THEE REGGIE WELLS!!!!” in response to Rowland. I always greeted you like that when I saw you! The first makeup artist I’ve ever had contact with! The first person in 1999 to advise me to cut off my mustache! 😂

I remember THEE REGGIE WELLS with a lot of happy feelings! You stroked my face, and each time, I felt humbled! I was humbled every time we conversed and had a good chuckle since I couldn’t believe such a beauty icon was doing my makeup! You are eternally adored, Reggie!!!🤍🕊️”

“Reggie, thank you so much for the love, support, and encouragement you gave me over the Years!!!” exclaimed Winfrey’s makeup artist at the time, Rutledge.

I will never forget you telling me that when you witnessed my artistic ability on OPRAH, you could sleep easy knowing she was in good care! Godfather, you deserve your wings, so rest well! 😊 You’ll always be remembered as a legend, my dear friend. I love you!
