The View was forced to hit pause on its Tyler Perry interview Tuesday after Sara Haines brought the media mogul to tears. The Oscar winner, 54 years old, came on the daytime talk program to promote the Prime Video documentary, which delves into his horrific upbringing and surviving his violent father, the difficult route to box office success, and his mother Maxine’s everlasting devotion.
Willie Maxine Perry, the basis for Tyler’s renowned Madea persona, died of cancer in December 2009.
The View was forced to hit pause on its Tyler Perry interview Tuesday after Sara Haines brought the media mogul to tears. “This film, I will watch every time I need my own power,” Haines told Perry at the “The View” table on Tuesday. “I wanted to run laps. It was fantastic.”
She went on, “Through it all, I met Maxine.” I had never met her.”
Haines asked another inquiry before her complimenting comment caught up with Perry.
“Okay, wait a minute,” he said, passionate and stumbling over his words.
“Did you mean you met my mother through that one?” Thank you very much,” Perry exclaimed as co-hosts Sunny Hostin and Joy Behar put their hands on his shoulders.
Perry went on to say, “To say that you met her through that, that takes me somewhere because, you know, this woman endured so much pain and she didn’t have some legacy, but she had me.”
“To say I was able to introduce her to you, you got me there, man,” he said, his eyes welling up as the hosts distributed tissues around the table. “I apologize. Have compassion, Lord. Thank you very much. That means a lot to me.”
Haines tried to continue the discussion once again, but a clearly upset Perry said he needed another second to comprehend what had just transpired.
“I just imagine a woman who lived her entire life in such pain and was always concerned about everyone else,” he remarked of his mother again.
“I saw her grow ill. I saw her acquire cancer. ‘Are you happy?’ she wanted to know. ‘Are you all right?’ She never placed herself on the list since she didn’t think she was significant or that anybody would notice.”
“So to say that this documentary that they did about my life introduces her to the world, that moves me because she was that special to me,” he stated before lightening the mood, “that moves me because she was that special to me.” “I know there are other questions so please ask me something else.”
“Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story” will be available on Prime Video on November 17th.
