Kirk Burrowes, a co-founding partner of the iconic Bad Boy Entertainment label, has launched a new lawsuit against Janice Combs, mother of Sean “Diddy” Combs alleging that she unlawfully and secretly took control of his 25 percent ownership stake in the company. According to the lawsuit Burrowes claims he was coerced into relinquishing his share under the threat of violence from Sean Combs in 1996.
The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in Manhattan federal court, argues that Burrowes was unaware of Janice’s alleged involvement until recently. He claims that an investigation initiated last year revealed irrefutable evidence that in or around 1998 Janice assumed control of his 25 percent stake without his knowledge or consent. This he asserts constitutes “fraudulent concealment,” and as such he contends the legal claim is not bound by the typical six-year statute of limitations.
Burrowes, who once served as Bad Boy’s president before being ousted, had previously filed a lawsuit against Sean Combs and attorney Kenneth Meiselas. He alleged that in May 1996, Combs stormed into his office wielding a baseball bat and forced him to sign away his ownership under duress. That lawsuit was dismissed due to statute of limitations restrictions.

Now, Burrowes’ attorney, Tyrone Blackburn, asserts that Janice played a key role in the scheme to strip him of his rightful ownership. The lawsuit claims that she maintained an appearance of innocence while secretly conspiring to consolidate control of the company. She allegedly reassured Burrowes over the years, promising to help him reclaim his stake, only to ultimately betray him.
In addition to fraud,
the lawsuit accuses Janice of unjust enrichment and deceptive business practices. Burrowes seeks either the full value of his 25 percent stake or its return, along with an independent audit of Bad Boy’s financial records since its founding. He is also pursuing punitive damages.
Efforts to reach Janice Combs’ representatives were unsuccessful, while Sean Combs remains in custody in Brooklyn on separate criminal charges related to sex trafficking and racketeering.
