Rep. Elise Stefanik has addressed President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw her nomination for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. The move, announced on Trump’s Truth Social account, was driven by concerns over the Republican Party’s narrow House majority.
Stefanik confirmed she had multiple conversations with Trump before making the decision.
“I have been proud to be a team player. The president knows that. He and I had multiple conversations today, and we are committed to delivering results on behalf of the American people,” she said.
She reiterated her commitment to advancing the conservative agenda and strengthening the party’s position in Congress.
Trump emphasized that keeping Stefanik in Congress was essential for pushing forward his America First agenda. He stated that with the GOP’s slim majority, he could not risk losing her seat. He praised Stefanik’s loyalty and leadership, saying she would continue to play a vital role in the party’s success.
While Stefanik was expected to be confirmed with bipartisan support, concerns over political complications in New York contributed to the decision. GOP officials feared that New York Governor Kathy Hochul might delay a special election to replace Stefanik if she left Congress, potentially giving Democrats an advantage. Additionally, disagreements within the GOP over who should replace her added to the uncertainty.
Despite stepping back from the UN role, Stefanik will remain active in House leadership. She confirmed she will continue advocating for Trump’s policies and speaking out on key political issues. Trump also hinted that Stefanik may still have a place in his administration in the future. Her withdrawal underscores the Republican Party’s strategic focus on maintaining power. As speculation grows over who will take the UN ambassador role, Stefanik’s decision highlights the Republican Party’s focus on maintaining congressional power.
