A federal judge has ruled against Universal Music Group’s (UMG) attempt to delay the discovery process in Drake’s defamation lawsuit concerning Kendrick Lamar’s controversial track, “Not Like Us.” The decision, made on Wednesday by Judge Jeannette Vargas in a New York court, now allows Drake’s legal team to seek documents that UMG previously deemed “highly commercially sensitive,” including details regarding Lamar’s record contract.

UMG initially filed a request in March to postpone discovery, arguing that the lawsuit should be dismissed entirely and that providing such sensitive documents would pose an “undue burden” on the company. However, Judge Vargas denied this request, ensuring that the legal battle moves forward without delay.

Among the documents Drake’s team is requesting are all contracts between Kendrick Lamar and UMG, as well as compensation details for John Janick, the CEO of Interscope Records, for the past five years. UMG has strongly opposed this request, stating that these records contain confidential and proprietary information, making their disclosure potentially damaging to the company’s business interests. Additionally, UMG expressed concerns about the extensive resources required to fulfill Drake’s legal demands, citing the need to sift through large volumes of electronic and hard-copy records, contracts, and internal communications. Despite these objections, the ruling now grants Drake’s team the authority to formally request these documents, although it remains uncertain how many of them UMG will ultimately be compelled to provide.

Following the court’s decision, UMG has yet to issue an official statement. Meanwhile,

Drake’s attorney, Mark Gottlieb, expressed confidence in the ruling, stating, “Now it’s time to see what UMG was so desperately trying to hide.”

With the judge’s latest ruling, the case is set to move forward, and all eyes are now on what new revelations may emerge as discovery progresses. Whether UMG will be forced to disclose the requested documents remains to be seen, but this decision marks a significant step in the ongoing legal dispute between one of the biggest rappers in the industry and his own record label.
