Drake and LeBron James were once close friends, their bond lasting over a decade. From public shoutouts to private gatherings, the rapper and the NBA superstar shared a mutual admiration that extended beyond their respective industries. However, that friendship is now a thing of the past.
The first major sign of trouble came when LeBron, now fully embracing his Los Angeles lifestyle, openly sided with Kendrick Lamar Drake’s biggest rival in the rap game. LeBron attended Lamar’s The Pop Out concert on Juneteenth and was even caught on camera enthusiastically rapping along to Not Like Us, a diss track directly targeting Drake. This move sent shockwaves through both the hip-hop and sports communities, as it essentially confirmed LeBron’s allegiance in the ongoing rap feud.
For Drake, the situation is complicated. Over the years, he has frequently referenced LeBron in his music, often celebrating him in bars scattered across his biggest hits. But with their friendship now fractured, Drake seems determined to distance himself from the NBA legend.
During a recent concert in Perth, Australia, Drake performed his 2018 hit Non-Stop. The original lyrics include the line:
“How I go from 6 to 23 like I’m LeBron?”a reference to LeBron’s jersey number switch. But this time, Drake made a subtle yet pointed change, rapping instead: “How I go from 6 to 23 but not LeBron.”
Though a minor tweak, the alteration speaks volumes. Drake has yet to publicly address his fallout with LeBron, but actions speak louder than words. His decision to erase LeBron’s name from his lyrics suggests that he wants to leave their friendship in the past.
As the rap world continues to dissect every move in the Drake-Kendrick saga, LeBron appears unfazed, focusing on his NBA career. With the Los Angeles Lakers making waves after acquiring Luka Dončić, LeBron has bigger things on his plate.
