Drake seems to have taken a liking to Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us,” even incorporating lines from it into his social media posts. This was evident on Sunday when a video of a Drake impersonator performing “Hotline Bling” at a New York boxing gym began circulating online. The clip, shared by New York Nico, caught Drake’s attention, prompting him to share his reaction on his Instagram Story.
“Sometimes you gotta pop out,” Drake wrote, referencing a line from the first verse of “Not Like Us,” where Kendrick raps,
“Sometimes you gotta pop out and show n****s Certified boogeyman, I’m the one that up the score with ’em.”
This isn’t the first time the Toronto rapper has alluded to Lamar’s track, which held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for two weeks. Just last month, during a bowling match, Drake humorously dubbed himself “69 God,” quoting another line from Kendrick’s popular song.
Despite the ongoing feud between the two artists, Drake’s summer appears unaffected. According to Gordo, Drake’s collaborator on his “Honestly, Nevermind” album, the Toronto rapper has been in high spirits. “Ever since all this has happened … I’ve seen him happier. It’s really weird. He’s pretty jolly,” Gordo told People in late July. He dismissed the internet’s portrayal of Drake as sad and tired, attributing it to a bad photo taken by a poor-quality camera. “The guy’s been happy as s—, to be honest. He’s chilling.”
Gordo, formerly known as Carnage, insists that Drake has moved on from his rivalry with Kendrick Lamar and is focusing on himself again. “He’s been past it,” the producer explained.
“He was just on the longest tour ever, for like a year. I think he’s just chilling now.”
Throughout their feud, Drake released several diss tracks targeting Lamar, including “Euphoria,” “Family Matters,” and “The Heart Pt. 6.” While Lamar did not formally respond to “The Heart Part 6,” he performed multiple diss tracks during his Juneteenth Pop Out concert and released a music video for “Not Like Us.” The video features Lamar destroying an owl piñata and ends with an owl in a cage, a nod to Drake’s OVO logo.
In a move signaling his shift away from the feud, Drake recently collaborated with Gordo on two tracks (“Sideways” and “Healing”) from the Grammy-nominated producer’s debut album, “Diamante.”
Last week, Drake shared footage of his Toronto mansion flooded after days of torrential rain. The news of the flooding came shortly after the rapper had allowed fans to take a virtual tour of his residence via a feature on his merch website. The mansion had previously made headlines earlier this year when a man was arrested for attempting to break into the property.
