As music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs awaits his criminal trial, his legal team is asking the court to delay the proceedings by two months. The trial originally scheduled for May 5, comes in the wake of serious allegations, including sex trafficking and racketeering.
According to the court documents Diddy’s attorneys submitted a formal letter to Judge Arun Subramanian on Wednesday. In the letter,
they argued that moving forward with the current timeline would be unfair, stating they cannot “in good conscience” proceed with the trial in May.
The trial delay request comes on the heels of a flurry of developments in the case. Just days earlier, prosecutors filed a superseding indictment that introduced new charges. Diddy entered a plea of not guilty in response during a Monday hearing.
Diddy’s Defense Team Expands As Pressure Mounts
In response to the evolving case, Diddy’s defense team has added a new high-profile name: Brian Steel, the attorney currently representing rapper Young Thug. Diddy’s current legal team Marc Agnifilo and Teny Geragos say that with the new charges and expanded defense strategy, they need extra time to adequately prepare.
“This is a situation the government has created,” the lawyers wrote. “Yet they are opposing a perfectly reasonable request.” They also pointed out that it is common practice to delay trials when a superseding indictment is issued, especially when it could disadvantage the defendant.
Agnifilo had initially floated the idea of a short two-week delay, but that has since grown into a request for two full months. Judge Subramanian, however, appeared hesitant, stating, “We are a freight train moving toward trial.”
Diddy was first arrested on these charges in September 2024. He has denied all allegations and remains in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. The trial, as of now, is still set for May 5.
