Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has announced that the Pentagon is canceling $580 million in contracts and grants deemed wasteful. The move is part of a broader initiative to cut excessive spending and align military funding with the Trump administration’s priorities.
Among the canceled projects is an HR software system initially budgeted at $36 million but now running eight years behind schedule and $280 million over budget. “That’s 780% over budget. We’re not doing that anymore,” Hegseth said in a video on X. For more updates check our Youtube channel.
The cuts also include $350 million in grants related to climate policies, including funding to decarbonize Navy ships. A $5.2 million grant aimed at expanding career opportunities for BIPOC students in naval STEM programs was also eliminated. Additionally, a $9 million university grant for equitable AI research was scrapped.
“I need lethal machine learning models, not equitable machine learning models,” Hegseth stated.
Other contracts targeted for cancellation include $30 million in IT services from consulting firms Gartner and McKinsey. Hegseth credited the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, for identifying excessive spending. He noted that DOGE has already flagged $800 million in wasteful expenditures, with more cuts expected.
Hegseth emphasized that the Pentagon must ensure taxpayer dollars are used effectively. “They are not a good use of taxpayer dollars. Ultimately, that’s who funds us, and we owe you transparency and make sure we’re using it well.”
The administration has previously cut $80 million in spending, including $1.9 million for diversity training in the Air Force and $6 million for university programs promoting political unity. More reductions are expected as the Pentagon continues to reassess its budget.
