According to the Chicago Tribune, the board of directors decided to terminate Officer David Laskus on Thursday, unanimously, after discovering that he had used excessive force and lied to investigators about the event.

When Mia Wright arrived to the Brickyard Mall on May 31, 2020, she was a passenger in a vehicle that came there during a weekend of demonstrations and disturbances that followed the murder of George Floyd. Floyd was a black man who passed away after a white police officer in Minneapolis kneeled on his neck. Frederick Floyd was killed.

According to the allegations made in a federal complaint that Wright and four of his relatives filed, they traveled to the shopping mall with the intention of going shopping but were unaware that it was closed because of the commotion. According to the allegations made in the complaint, law enforcement officials encircled their vehicle, used their batons to smash the glass, and also dragged Wright out of the vehicle by her hair. Wright said that she was rendered blind in one eye as a result of flying glass that arrived as a result of cops shattering the windows. In that particular moment, Wright was 25 years old.

According to the counsel for the city, officers said that they believed some members of Wright’s gang were attempting to infiltrate a business located inside the mall in order to steal merchandise. In March of 2022, the City Council gave its approval to a settlement that was worth $1.675 million and included Wright and the four other individuals who were there on that day.

Although Laskus was not charged with any criminal offenses, the police board did take notice of the fact that he denied pulling Wright by her hair when he was speaking to detectives, despite the fact that there was video footage providing proof to the contrary.

The Cook County Circuit Court is where Laskus may file an appeal over his termination.
