Dave Chappelle Targets Trans and Disabled Individuals in New Netflix Particular. Dave Chappelle chose the disabled population as his new target audience for his most recent Netflix comedy show.
After receiving criticism for his comments against the LGBTQ+ community, notably with regard to transgender individuals, in his 2021 Netflix special “The Closer,” Chappelle’s new special “The Dreamer” made its release on the streaming site on Sunday.
During “The Dreamer,” the 50-year-old comic addressed the topic by saying to the crowd, “I’m not (expletive) with those people anymore if you came here to this show tonight thinking I’m gonna make fun of them again.”
The difficulty wasn’t worth it. I’m not talking about trans folks, I promise. That’s all—perhaps three or four times.”
Dave Chappelle draws parallels between the trans community and Jim Carrey’s acting style.
To kick off his new special, Chappelle did take a few punches at the trans community. He joked that he had visited the “Man on the Moon” shoot and met his hero, Jim Carrey. Carrey played the late comic Andy Kaufman in the film from 1999.
“I was devastated to learn that, instead of getting to meet Jim Carrey, I had to spend the whole day acting like Andy Kaufman. Jim Carrey was definitely in it. I could know by looking at him that it was, without a doubt, Jim Carrey. “Chappelle recalled how Carrey maintained his persona while not on camera. “I say all that to say … that’s how trans people make me feel.”
Chappelle proceeded to announce the new underprivileged group he intended to concentrate “The Dreamer” on. “I’m making jokes about people with disabilities all night. He said, “I love punching down, and they’re not as organized as the gays.”
Among the comedian’s jokes regarding persons with disabilities was a reference to paraplegic and former Republican lawmaker of North Carolina Madison Cawthorn. Jokingly, he claimed to have met Cawthorn and said, “After that, I just left.” I wanted to demonstrate to him what I could accomplish that he was unable to. I didn’t participate.
Dave Chappelle makes light of Will Smith hitting Chris Rock and launches an assault on him.
Taking a different approach, Chappelle spent a good deal of time in “The Dreamer” talking about the notorious incident when Will Smith smacked Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars.
“I felt insulted. I took offense at more than simply the smack. That was just part of the story. The really awful thing, according to Chappelle, was that Will sat back and enjoyed the remainder of his evening after the smack.
According to Chappelle, he first made fun of Rock for how he handled what was later labeled “The Slap.” “Everything’s funny until it happens to you.”
Chappelle was assaulted live on stage at the Netflix Is A Joke event at the Hollywood Bowl in May 2022. Isaiah Lee admitted to the media that the comedian’s performance was “triggering” for him. Lee was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon after he pointed a toy gun at Chappelle. Lee denies approaching the comic with a firearm drawn.
In the scene from “The Dreamer,” Chappelle added, “We gave that kid a good wallop,” alluding to the time his security detail intervened and floored the attacker. He added, half-jokingly, that Rock was furious that no one had bothered him backstage at the Oscars.
“I have discovered what Will Smith would not have done – relish the remainder of his evening,” Chappelle concluded the jest.
