Renowned academic Cornel West has recently shared his thoughts in an interview, suggesting that “President Biden might step back from the 2024 presidential race in the coming months. “
West, who is running as an independent candidate, drew parallels with former President Lyndon B. Johnson’s decision not to seek reelection in 1968, citing health concerns and criticism of the Vietnam War.
West acknowledged the uncertainty of the situation and floated the idea that Biden, facing growing criticism on foreign policy and the economy, could have what he called an “LBJ moment” and withdraw from the race.
He expressed that Biden seems to be “running out of gas” and mentioned his openness to the possibility that Biden’s campaign might not last until November.
The academic clarified that his main competition is with Democrats who haven’t officially declared their candidacy, specifically mentioning Governors Gavin Newsom of California and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan.
West also touched on the Republican side, noting its seeming stability but speculating that former President Trump might exit the race if legal challenges become too burdensome.
West characterized Trump as a “pied piper” and a “fascist” and labeled Biden as a “milquetoast neoliberal.” He voiced concerns about Trump potentially leading to domestic issues, like a civil war, and worried about Biden’s foreign policy potentially contributing to World War III.
Despite West receiving limited support in national polls, he’s running as an unaffiliated independent candidate after prior campaigns with the People’s Party and the Green Party. Downplaying concerns about being a spoiler to Biden’s reelection, West argued that if voters choose him over Biden, it doesn’t make him a spoiler.
West has already secured a spot on the Alaska ballot and aims to be on at least 40 state ballots by Election Day. He faces competition from other independent candidates, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., positioning himself as a leading anti-establishment candidate, and Jill Stein, making a return to the ballot for the Green Party.
In the interview, West emphasized the fluidity of the situation and expressed his openness to different possibilities. He pointed out that Biden’s campaign might face challenges, especially considering the criticisms on various fronts.
He compared the potential scenario to Johnson’s surprise announcement in 1968, suggesting that Biden could also have a moment where he decides not to continue with his reelection bid.
West highlighted that his primary focus is on challenging Democrats who haven’t officially declared their candidacy for the White House. He mentioned Governors Newsom and Whitmer as potential Democratic candidates he sees as competition.
Despite West’s limited support in national polls, he remains committed to his independent run. He downplayed concerns about being a spoiler, asserting that if people choose to vote for him, it’s because they believe in his case and vision.
