Copyright Clash: Songwriter Melvin Moore Files $15M Legal Attack Against Chloe Bailey

Chlöe Bailey, the rising pop sensation now finds herself embroiled in a high stakes legal battle as a New York court case accuses her of exploiting a key creative contributor to her 2024 album, Trouble In Paradise. Songwriter Melvin Moore who also performs under the stage name 4Rest has filed a lawsuit seeking $15 million in damages. Moore alleges that he was never properly credited or compensated for his creative input on several tracks, including “Same Lingerie,” “Favorite,” and “Might As Well.”

In the 33-page legal complaint submitted on February 20, 2025, Moore asserts that Bailey, along with Sony Music, Parkwood Entertainment, and Columbia Records, engaged in fraudulent misrepresentation and violated the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The lawsuit further charges that a civil conspiracy and deceptive business practices were at play contending that the defendants deliberately exploited his work for commercial gain without due acknowledgment. Moore claims that his team made repeated, good faith efforts to settle the matter amicably, only to have those overtures rebuffed. As a remedy, the suit seeks $5 million per song and an additional $150,000 for every instance of copyright infringement.

Moore’s filing emphasizes the broader implications for the music industry, arguing that the creative minds behind the hits must receive fair treatment and adequate compensation.

“It’s time for the industry to acknowledge the value of the creatives who bring the music to life and compensate them fairly,”

he stated, highlighting a long-standing debate over artistic rights and financial recognition in an era of rapid digital distribution.

On a related note, Bailey has previously expressed her inclination to disregard negative criticism, attributing her focus and resilience to deeply held religious beliefs. During an appearance on Audacy’s V-103 podcast last year she remarked that she prefers to let her music speak for itself, accepting that public opinions will vary. With this lawsuit now in the spotlight, the case underscores ongoing tensions within the music industry regarding creative ownership, recognition, and the evolving standards of compensation.
