Congresswoman Cori Bush Condemns ‘Unconstitutional’ Calls for War Against Iran.Progressive lawmakers in the US are urging caution and diplomacy in response to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. Following Israel’s bombing of Iran’s embassy in Syria, which killed 16 people, Iran launched retaliatory attacks on Saturday.
“We cannot let the warmongers win; our country and our world are calling for restraint,” said Rep. Cori Bush.
While some lawmakers have called for war against Iran, progressives like Representatives Jamaal Bowman, Cori Bush, Ilhan Omar, Barbara Lee, and Summer Lee are advocating for an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation efforts.
These lawmakers warn that another protracted war in the Middle East would be disastrous for the region and its people. They argue that the American public does not support another war and that the US should exercise restraint and use diplomatic tools to reduce tensions.
Omar stated, “Civilians in Gaza, Israel, the West Bank, and Iran, as well as Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen, are bearing the brunt of this escalation, and there must be a ceasefire on all sides.”
The progressives also criticize Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s warmongering, which they say puts millions of civilians at risk. Bowman stated, “Netanyahu is willing to endanger the lives of millions just to draw the US deeper into a conflict whose flame he fans.” The lawmakers agree with President Joe Biden’s call for de-escalation but argue that the US must end its support of Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza and its violence in the West Bank, Lebanon, and beyond.
Critics argue that the US bears significant responsibility for Israel’s actions and that stopping the spread of hostilities requires ending US support for Israel. The conflict has already involved 16 countries, including the US, which has provided military aid to Israel and direct military support through actions like US troops’ engagement against Houthi forces and the people of Yemen.
War hawks in Congress have been quick to call for war against Iran, claiming that Iran’s attacks were “unprovoked” despite Israel’s embassy bombing. However, progressive lawmakers like Bush condemn such warmongering statements, saying they are calling for an unauthorized war. Bush stated, “We cannot let the warmongers win; our country and our world are calling for restraint, de-escalation, a lasting ceasefire, and diplomacy. Our government must listen. That is how we save lives.”
In summary, progressive lawmakers are urging caution and diplomacy in response to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, warning that another protracted war in the Middle East would be disastrous for the region and its people. They argue that the US must end its support of Israel’s genocidal assault on Gaza and its violence in the West Bank, Lebanon, and beyond, and instead pursue de-escalation efforts and diplomacy to reduce tensions and save lives.
