Colombian President Gustavo Petro reversed his decision to reject U.S. deportation flights after President Donald Trump threatened economic and diplomatic sanctions. In a striking concession, Petro offered the use of Colombia’s presidential plane to assist in deporting Colombian migrants back to their homeland.
Trump’s threats included a 25% tariff on all Colombian goods, rising to 50% if compliance was not immediate. He also ordered visa bans, travel restrictions, and enhanced inspections of Colombian cargo and flights. Petro initially resisted, arguing that migrants should be treated with dignity and rejecting the idea of criminalizing them. However, after Trump’s ultimatum, Petro quickly agreed to all conditions. “The Government of Colombia, under the direction of President Gustavo Petro, has arranged the presidential plane to facilitate the dignified return of our compatriots,” read a statement from Petro’s administration.
The agreement requires Colombia to accept all deportees without delay. The White House celebrated the outcome, claiming it demonstrated America’s regained respect on the global stage. “President Trump will continue to fiercely protect our nation’s sovereignty,” the administration stated, adding that sanctions would remain in place until the first flight is successfully completed.

U.S. officials acted swiftly to implement Trump’s orders. Customs and Border Protection enhanced inspections, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio imposed visa restrictions and suspended consular operations in Bogotá. Speaker Mike Johnson supported Trump, warning other nations of consequences if they failed to accept deportees.
Despite Petro’s initial defiance, he later retaliated with his own tariff threats. However, analysts note that the Colombian government’s rapid compliance underscores the influence of U.S. economic leverage.
