Big Sean recently opened up about why he hasn’t yet proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Jhené Aiko, despite them sharing a child together. During an in-depth interview with Charlamagne Tha God, the Detroit rapper discussed his nearly decade-long relationship with the R&B singer, providing fans with a glimpse into their dynamic.
When asked about the possibility of marrying Aiko, Sean clarified, “There has not been a secret industry marriage. It’s a little personal, but to be real with you, just like any people who have dealt with love, we’ve had our ups and downs. And I think it’s still finding the right navigation through it all.” This statement underscores the complexities and challenges they’ve faced, even as they remain committed to each other.
Sean further explained his perspective on marriage, noting that he doesn’t want to rush into it. “To me, marriage symbolizes the best relationship. People be like, ‘When y’all gonna get married?’ I feel like having a relationship is first and foremost, and marriage is a byproduct of that,” he said. He emphasized that many people have a misconception that marriage is a necessity, adding,
“A lot of people get the idea of like, ‘Oh, you have to get married.’ But to me, that’s almost a fear-based way of thinking because then people be getting divorced. The divorce rate is so high.”
Despite his hesitations, Sean isn’t completely ruling out the idea of marrying his Twenty88 collaborator. He acknowledged that both he and Aiko have to be aligned in their desires and efforts. “She and I both have to be on the same page,” he added. “Not to say we aren’t. I can only speak for myself that there needs to be more work done so we can keep going. Because there’s a lot of focus on our family and careers and everything, and that is something that I feel like has not been the main focus.”
Their relationship has had its share of public moments, including a viral incident during a concert in Los Angeles. While performing his verse from their 2013 collaboration “Beware,” Sean rapped the line, “Kept my phone on silent ever since you got a ring,” to which Aiko responded, “What ring?” drawing attention to her bare ring finger. This playful exchange highlighted the ongoing curiosity and speculation surrounding their potential marriage.
Big Sean and Jhené Aiko share a one-year-old son named Noah, who was born in November 2022. The arrival of Noah was particularly poignant, as Aiko had previously experienced a miscarriage. Their journey as parents adds another layer to their relationship, requiring them to balance their personal and professional lives.
The couple’s history is also marked by past relationships. Sean started dating Aiko in 2016, shortly after ending his high-profile relationship with pop star Ariana Grande. Aiko was previously married to producer Dot da Genius, but they separated in 2016, around the same time her romance with Sean began. She also has a daughter from a previous relationship with R&B singer O’Ryan, the younger brother of Omarion.
Sean’s romantic history includes a previous engagement to Naya Rivera, the late Glee star, which ended in 2014. Following that, he had a brief relationship with Ariana Grande. These experiences have undoubtedly shaped his views on love and commitment.
In the interview, Sean reiterated that while he sees marriage as a potential future step, it’s not something he’s willing to rush into without thorough consideration and mutual readiness. He said
“I would like to, and I don’t like putting our personal business out there like that either, but there’s a lot of work that needs to be done,”
His candidness reveals a thoughtful approach to relationships, prioritizing stability and genuine connection over societal expectations.
